Color and type
- Determine which type of garnet you are looking at. This plays a huge role in value. From most to least valuable, the types are:
- Demantoid (andradite) - emerald green. Up to $5000 per carat.
- Tsavorite (grossular)- vivid green. Also up to $5000 per carat.
- Mandarine (spessartite) - bright orange. Up to $1,000 per carat.
- Malaia (spessartite) - pinkish to reddish orange. To $500 per carat.
- Rhodolite - red to purple (grape.) Between $100 and $400 per carat.
- Others - yellow, brown, light green, red. $40 and up.
Value Factors
Look for purity and uniformity of color. Examine from all angles, over varied
backgrounds and different light sources. It's best to compare garnet of type and
color together.
Garnet is rarely treated for color and clarity enhancement. It is one of the most
"eye-clean" gems on the market. However, look for flaws that might block color
uniformity and stone durability. It's always ideal to shop for loose gemstones and
have them mounted yourself.
Since garnet comes in so many colors and sizes, only compare stones of like size
and color. Think in terms of price-per-carat, not total cost. Beware of "total
weight" price tags, especially when looking at more valuable stones. You don't
want to pay demantoid per-carat prices for gold settings.
Most garnet is very hard. However, the most valuable demantoid variety is quite
soft. Take extra care in mounting and use.
