Shopping checklist Print this page and take it with you to the jeweler's. As you satisfy each of the items on the list, you can rest assured that your jade purchase is informed, complete and sound. And remember the most important thing when shopping for any gemstone worth treasuring; have fun! Color Shopping for top quality jade? Think deep, rich, green, not unlike that exhibited in the finest emeralds. Make sure the hue is consistent throughout the stone. Always ask if the jade is jadeite or nephrite, as jadeite from Mynamar (Burma) has long been known to produce the finest jade in the world. If you are in the market for a different color, lavender is next to green in value, followed by red, yellow, white and black. Clarity The finest jadeite stones can be almost transparent. Look out for flaws that might block light from passing through the stone. Be especially aware of surface cracks, or fractures that can be seen inside the stone. These not only block light, but they can also greatly endanger the stone's durability. Size and carat weight When looking at top quality stones, think in terms of price per carat, not total cost. Beware of "total weight" price tags. You want to know the price of the jade before setting. If you are shopping for carved jade, it will be priced by the piece, not the carat. Treatments Always ask your jeweler what kind of color and clarity enhancement treatments have been performed on each stone. Waxing is totally acceptable, but bleaching is iffy. Make sure you get all treatments in writing on your bill of sale. |
