Sizing up jade; it's not just about the carats.
When shopping for any top quality gemstone, it's a good idea to think in terms of "price-per-carat" rather than total cost. Even though the vast majority of jade is sold in pieces that carry a "total cost" price tag, cabochon emerald green jadeite of brilliant translucence will be sold by the carat. So, here's a couple carat tips:
One carat equals one fifth of one gram.
Thinking "price-per-carat," calculate the total price by multiplying the cost per carat by the carat weight.
Beware of "total weight" prices on rings and other set jewelry. Make sure you aren't paying jade carat prices for gold settings.
Always compare stones of similar quality, size and shape.
There is no standard "price-per-carat" on any gemstone. Just because one dealer may charge more than another, doesn't mean anything shady is going on.
Size can play a major role in per-carat cost. If a cabochon is too thin or too small, its price-per-carat will be substantially less than a stone of equal color and clarity quality.
