Lengths:
We've all seen those flowing strands of pearls on Flapper girls, but did you know that type of strand is called a rope? Pearl strands come in a variety of lengths, and each length has its own name:
- Choker - 14" -16"
- Princess - 18"
- Matinee - 20" - 24"
- Opera - 32" -34"
- Rope - 36" and up.
Buying Tools:
- Strands are available with round, off round, or baroque (not round) pearls. Whichever shape you choose, look closely for uniformity of shape, color, and size. Roll the pearls gently over a smooth surface to feel for pearls that don't move in sync with the rest of the strand.
- Consider luster and, in natural pearls, orient. This is the deep inner glow that makes pearls so special. The deeper the glow, the thicker the nacre.
- Check the quality of stringing. Observe the meeting point of the pearls. You should see an intricate knot that keeps the pearls from touching and protects the delicate nacre from rubbing and chipping.
- Pearls come in a wide range of colors. Try the strand on and make sure the color works with your skin tone.
