Wouldn't you love to stroll down the Spanish Steps in flowing strands of pearls?

Or have dinner on the Seine in your diamond solitaire necklace? You shouldn't be afraid to take your favorite jewelry on your overseas holidays. But you do need to take a few precautions before taking off.

  • Keep documented proof of all your jewelry.
  • Make sure your insurance covers your jewelry in each country you visit.
  • Pack your jewelry with care. Wrap pieces individually in velvet or silk and put them in your carry-on bag.
  • Don't pack jewelry in your make-up case. In the event of accidental spills or leakage, the chemicals can ruin your jewelry.
  • Never transport your jewelry in checked luggage.
  • Carry documented proof of purchase. You don't want to get stuck paying duty at customs coming home because you can't prove you didn't buy that ruby pendant in Thailand.
  • Always take advantage of hotel safes. Make sure to get the name of the hotel employee who locked your jewels up for you.
  • If you purchase new jewelry overseas, only buy from reputable dealers. Ask your hotel concierge or tour guide for recommendations and write down their names in relation to the merchants they suggest.
  • Make sure to get all guarantees of authenticity, treatment disclosures, return guarantees and sales clerk names, along with total prices clearly written on your bill of sale.
  • When coming home, keep an eye on your carry-on bag as it goes through the metal detector. If you see an airport inspector looking through your bag, watch closely.
  • Happy trails!
